Whisky Distilleries

Oban and Mull

Oban Distillery: Nestling beneath the steep cliff that overlooks Oban sits one of Scotland’s oldest sources of single malt Scotch whisky. You will be taken around the distillery by a knowledgeable guide exploring each part of the whisky making process.

Tobermory and Ledaig: Tobermory Distillery was established in 1798, is the only distillery on the island and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. This unique distillery produces two very distinctly different malts; the lightly peated Tobermory and the more robustly peated Ledaig.

Islay and Jura

Ardbeg Distillery

Established in 1815, Ardbeg Distillery is one of the three “Kildalton Distilleries” on Islay, along with Lagavulin and Laphroaig. Located on Islay’s south coast, Ardbeg distills one of the peatiest whiskies of all the Islay malts. Ardbeg’s distinctive character is due to the specification of malt used; a minimum level of 50 p.p.m. phenol. Distillery Tours £5.

Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig Distillery is considered one of the most strongly flavoured of all scotch whiskies, and is generally aged to 10 years. Laphroaig is the only whisky to carry the Royal Warrant of HRH, Prince of Wales (the 15-year-old is reportedly his favourite scotch whisky), which was awarded to him person during a visit to the distillery in 1994. Distillery Tours £5.

Lagavulin Distillery

Lagavulin Distillery officially dates from 1816, though some records show illicit whisky distilling on the site as far back as 1742. Lagavulin Single Malt Whisky has a strong, peaty flavour and a noticeable presence of iodine. The iodine divides many tasters who either love it or hate it and is not necessarily the best malt to introduce to new whisky drinkers. Distillery Tours £6.

Bowmore Distillery

Bunnahabhain Distillery is a relatively mild Islay malt and its taste varies greatly from other fine spirits to be found on the island. Water rises through Islay’s limestone and is piped to the distillery so it doesn’t pick up any peat. Distillery Tour Times £6.

Caol Ila Distillery

The Caol Ila Distillery has the largest whisky production on Islay producing in one year what Kilchoman produces in a week! Almost 90% of Caol Ila whisky is used in blend whiskies such as Chivas Regal. Distillery Tours £6.
